{"id":4531,"date":"2019-10-23T15:28:00","date_gmt":"2019-10-23T13:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/?post_type=conseil&#038;p=4531"},"modified":"2024-11-27T14:32:57","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T13:32:57","slug":"colostrum-the-first-nutritional-and-immune-food-for-newborn-cows","status":"publish","type":"conseil","link":"https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/en\/conseil\/colostrum-the-first-nutritional-and-immune-food-for-newborn-cows\/","title":{"rendered":"Colostrum: the first nutritional and immune food for newborn cows"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"is-style-intro\">As part of its ongoing drive to provide breeders with new solutions to improve the performance and health of their herds, the Idena Ruminants team has been looking at the farrowing preparation phase, and in particular how it affects colostrum quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ic-blocks-responsive-spacer\"><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading icone-cow\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-30-color\">Colostrum<\/mark><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Good preparation for farrowing is part of the overall preventive health plan to reduce the use of antibiotics on livestock farms. This stage has a major influence on the quality of colostrum, which enables the transfer of passive immunity from the mother to the newborn. In fact, many consider the feeding of the tari animal to be the most important phase in the herd&#8217;s production cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In ruminants, syndesmochorial placentation prevents the passage of large molecules and fat-soluble substances from the mother&#8217;s blood to the fetus. These accumulate in the udder, where they enter the composition of colostrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1400\" height=\"351\" src=\"https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-eng-1400x351.png\" alt=\"Image2 - ENG\" class=\"wp-image-4535\" style=\"width:846px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-eng-1400x351.png 1400w, https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-eng-768x193.png 768w, https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-eng-1536x385.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/image2-eng-2048x514.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1400px) 100vw, 1400px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Contributions of colostrum:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Immunoglobulins G, M and A, and cytokines to protect the newborn from pathogens until it acquires its own immunity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Energy to combat hypothermia in the first hours of life.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Vitamins and trace elements for all vital functions. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Growth factors, enzymes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ic-blocks-responsive-spacer\"><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading icone-star\">Colostrum <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-30-color\">formation and technical<\/mark> points<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Colostrum is produced in the udder, starting at the onset of dry period. Components are transferred from the blood to the udder, in particular immunoglobulins, the quantity of which accumulated in the last three weeks before parturition represents up to 1.5 kg in dairy cows! At the same time, concentrations in the blood of pregnant females tend to fall, making them more vulnerable to pathogens, dietary imbalances and other stresses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Technical points of reference during farrowing:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colostrum composition changes very rapidly in the hours following farrowing. Immunoglobulin levels drop, as does the young animal&#8217;s capacity to absorb them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First dose: max. 2 h after birth.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Second dose: max 6 h after 1st dose.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Quantity ingested during first meal: lamb\/kid 250 mL, calf 4 L.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>IgG level &gt; 50 g\/L. Caution, this concentration already halves 9 h after farrowing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ic-blocks-responsive-spacer\"><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading icone-handshake\">The <mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0)\" class=\"has-inline-color has-secondary-30-color\">IDENA<\/mark> solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Composed of an original combination of plants with complementary antioxidant properties, <strong>Transvitel<\/strong> is used to boost animals&#8217; natural immunity during high-risk periods such as late gestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest trials conducted on suckling ewes at AgroParisTech show a clear improvement in the quality of the mothers&#8217; colostrum, as well as better lamb growth thereafter. <strong>Transvitel<\/strong> was distributed continuously for one month before and one month after farrowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"589\" height=\"391\" src=\"https:\/\/www.idena.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/figure-2-en.jpg\" alt=\"IDENA - IgG levels at farrowing TRANSVITEL\" class=\"wp-image-4538\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-ic-blocks-responsive-spacer\"><div style=\"height:100px\"><\/div><div style=\"height:50px\"><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As part of its ongoing drive to provide breeders with new solutions to improve the performance and health of their herds, the Idena Ruminants team has been looking at the farrowing preparation phase, and in particular how it affects colostrum quality.
